Deane's Doctrine of Naval Architecture, 1670

Edited and introduced by Brian Lavery, Conway Maritime Press 1981 (ISBN 0851771807)

Deane was a Master Shipwright at Harwich and Portsmouth in the late 17th century (he constructed in total 25 ships also three 1.st rates and four 3.rd rates), and this treatise was originally commissioned by Samuel Pepys to explain the intricacies of designing a major warship of that period. The work is very detailed and thus provides a valuable record of Restoration ship design.

The Synopsis of the book tells:
Despite this unique importance, by a curious quirk of history the work has remained in manuscript since 1670 and has never previously published in full. This first complete edition is not just an accurately transcribed version with the original illustrations, but also incorporates an authoritative introduction on Deane´s work and the context of Restoration ship design. Furthermore, a series of Appendices augments Deane´s descriptions with documents recently discovered by the Editor, including a contract specification for a Third Rate of this period giving complete scantling details, and a carving manifest with a resume of the decorative details for a similar ship. Finally, this superb book is rounded off with a set of plans, reconstructed by the Editor, of Deane´s most famous ship, the 70-gun RESOLUTION.

This book is describing very in detail the Arithmetic and the methods of drawing of the Master Shipwrights from this time. So for everybody who wants to understand more about drawings, plans and the construction techniques will find here a lot of information. But also the hull construction and the rigging from the 1.st rates to the 6.th rates are included.
