Indeed, spolded Tamarind wood has been used to carve the hull and the grain is somewhat like a reflexion of the water in which the canoe is sailing.  The purple colored wood is Purple Heart. Duke Kahanamoku loved to ride waves in this canoe. This model was built with the help of Tay Perry, of Friends of Hokule'a and Hawai'iloa, who provided photos of what remains of this historical canoe. Like in the original vessel, Ahakea wood was used to

The rims are made out of Primavera, capped and pegged onto the tops (manus ) of the canoe. Rims and tops are perfectly overlapping the hull. The canoe is a 6 seater, each seat can be slid back and forth. The float (ama) is of a contemporary shape. The model rest on the artist signature stand which consist of an inlaid wooden base and an acrylic wave style neck.
