This model was carved out of beautiful curly koa wood whereby the illusionary panels of the sail seem to take advantage of strong wind.

Top view. It is often said that the Polynesian people inspired themselves from nature to produce the geometrical patterns so commonly seen in their tattoos. The type of wood - grown in Hawaii - used to make the washstrakes and the fishing spears for this model is curiously showing traces of such Polynesian designs.

Long by 18 inches, 9 inches wide and 17 inches high, this canoe displays some uniquely Marquesan features. The distal section rises upward in a curve and passes into an horizontal neck showing a bird's-head outline when viewed from the side. The bird's head is inlaid with paua shell eyes. The after end piece rises sharply to end into a long and slender projection, sometimes bearing tiki figures. The booms are attached directly to the float as in Hawaiian attachment. This model is equipped with 3 fishing spears and a set of Marquesan type paddles.
